Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly referred to as PTSD, is a debilitating medical condition as a result of a horrifying incident, accident and/or shocking trauma such as a major and serious car, pedestrian, bus or train accident, rape, mugging, torture, child abuse, kidnapping, false imprisonment, plane crash, bombing, or even a natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or flood. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS OF PTSD? An individual is frequently reminded of a traumatic event and begins to re-experience the distressing trauma, which can thereafter re-occur on an on-going basis. The repeat memories and thoughts of the traumatic incident causes serious psychological distress. Some individuals may display a persistent avoidance as a result of a trauma. This is illustrated when an individual seeks to avoid trauma related thoughts, activities and/or things thereby interfering with normal life. Another symptom is an increased state of arousal in which an individual suffers though the PTSD by outbursts of anger, has sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and/or what is called an exaggerated startle response when shocked &/or exhibit irritability at an increased level and repeat basis.
